Advantages and Disadvantages of CIPP

Drainage and sewage pipes are essential for maintaining hygiene and minimizing flood dangers. Keeping these systems in good repair is becoming a growing challenge due to aging infrastructures. In order to keep expenses down and save time, as well as minimize disruptions, many places continue to explore alternative methods of pipe repair, such as CIPP. CIPP has become a widely used alternative to the traditional dig and repair method of pipe repair. Like anything else, CIPP repair has its advantages and disadvantages. We will discuss both in this post.

 Advantages

CIPP repair offers many advantages over traditional methods. The very fact that there is no excavation needed, makes it more cost effective, less time consuming, and environmentally friendly. There is no waste to dispose of. Pipes can be repaired underground with no damage to any buildings, concrete, or landscaping.

Advantages of CIPP can also be seen in the quality of the pipe repair. Due to the inside being smoother, the epoxy lining increases the flow capacity and calcification deposits no longer stick.  It is also a one piece liner which eliminates root infiltration. Another benefit is that it is corrosion proof, which greatly increases the longevity of the pipe itself.

 Disadvantages

There are one or two disadvantages of CIPP as well. Sometimes, badly damaged pipes are too far gone for CIPP to be an option.  There may be no choice but to dig to get to the root of the problem. Moreover, weather can play a big role as well. If it is an especially cold or rainy day, the curing process could take much longer than it would on a hot, sunny day.

Another disadvantage is that the epoxy lining used in CIPP repair follows the alignment of the host pipe so it will not correct any structural defects.  In addition, any roots or debris found in or around the original pipes, must be removed before installation. Unfortunately, this could increase the cost of the repair.

As you can see, CIPP has both advantages and disadvantages. However, advancements in technology have revolutionized the pipe repair industry. Despite the few drawbacks, CIPP repair has shown itself to be the most versatile and adaptable of all pipe repair methods. There will always be situations where digging is the only option. Be sure to get a professional inspection to help you decide which option is best.
